BFA SOCIAL LANDSCAPES
MESILLA CAMILLE SMITH
2012-2015
In this work, panoramic photographs were taken spontaneously and transcribed into paintings. Each of these moments are people and public places that are familiar to me which are created quickly and loosely without making too much notation into accuracy or proportion. I want the descriptive scribbles of line to be more or just as perceptible as the brush strokes of the paint on the surface. I use graphite pencil and color shaping tools in combination with oils. Just as Bonnard said, “Drawing is feeling” of what is being painted. By my being present with the subject matter in that particular moment, my feelings about the subject gives me the energy I put forth into the work.
